I wrote the first tutorial for installing Django on A Small Orange in their forum before they ever had a wiki. It looks like the current wiki page still includes much of that original tutorial. Wow!

I left A Small Orange because I needed/wanted better python support. They offered fcgi to support ror and "allowed" us python users to get whatever we could working with python. However, the common response was that they don't know python so they're not going to do any advanced customizations for us. That was over a year ago and things may have changed, but their refusal to install newer (or even multiple) versions of python etc, pushed me away.

If I ever needed to host a static/php site, they would be my first choice. They were wonderful to deal with and offered a great service at a great price. If their python support was as good, I would have stayed.

I first went with ASO because they were cheap, came highly recommended, and advertised Python as one of their 'features'. Sadly, they don't put a whole lot of effort into supporting Python.

I fully agree with everything Waylan said: For static/PHP sites, ASO can't be beat; but if you need any Python support, you're better off looking elsewhere.

Great community, but Python support is somewhat limited, especially compare to other companies like WebFaction.

Good community, easy to get in touch with they usually respond within few hours.

Django/FastCGI support on shared hosting is poor; fcgi processes are killed within few seconds effectively making it Django on CGI which is darn slow.

Not recommended for Django/FastCGI.

While I used ASO for my rails based hosting, their python/django support became very limiting when I began to look into setting up a project with them. With other hosts (I'm currently with Webfaction), I can get a full mod_python setup, and there's a fairly active amount of users on the forums who also work with Django, which is great for bouncing ideas around and such.

ASO has excellent customer service, though, and it was a shame when I ended up leaving them. If they offered better support for python/django I'd consider moving back.
