- We were one of the first ISPs to offer Django hosting and we have great support for it.
- You get your own Apache2/mod_python instance for maximum flexibility.
- Django hosting is available on our Shared 1 plan and above.
- Django can be installed from our one-click installer. Whenever a new Django release comes out we add it to our installer in a matter of hours.
- New one-click installer for Django and mod_wsgi
- We even have a Django-specific screencast showing a step-by-step installation of a real life Django site on our servers.

Most of what they claim up there is true. Very flexible. I run one site there off svn trunk. Only memory is hard to come by and running the site within the constraints is difficult. They are also responsive and I dont see much downtime. Their setup is so good that one doesnt really need to ask for help. I use apache with mod_python.

Been with them for over a year and I love it. Very flexible, awesome one-click installer for Django, fast and robust servers, friendly customer support, what more do you want?
PS: This website is hosted by WebFaction.

I love WebFaction. Super responsive support, very flexible service and very developer friendly. Want an additional feature, just file a ticket. If you need extra software or libraries you are free to install them over an ssh connection.
Only mod_python is listed on this site, although it is trivial to set up a Django site using mod_wsgi or FastCGI on WebFaction. They include directions for doing so on their forums.
Easily my favorite shared hosting site.

I've been with them for over a year and have no complaints. Especially since they removed many of the restrictions common to shared hosting plans. You can have as many domains, subdomains, apps, etc as long as you don't go over your memory, disk and bandwidth restrictions. Their custom control panel is the easiest I've ever used.
In a default django setup, you get your own apache/mod_python instance which is proxied through the main apache instance on the specified port. That means you have complete control over the apache config and can start and stop etc whenever you want. While this does cut into your memory limit, it doesn't really feel like shared hosting.
Definitely worth the few dollars more than other shared hosts charge. Just be sure to take the memory limit into account when choosing your plan.

I've been with WebFaction for a little over 2 years now and haven't had any major problems. They have a responsive team and well-built services.
My only complaint with them was their limit on the number of sites that could be run on a single account, but as of a few months ago they removed that limit...and I've since signed up for 5 years more. Gotta love the WF.

Their dedicated server offer looks poor compared to hetzner.de, specially if you want your server to be located in Europe.

I LOVE webfaction. I was with textdrive for a while and hated it. Webfaction makes setting up really complicated servers pretty easy. Nicely done. Django can come in any flavor and YOU control the extra libraries for Python. It is awesome.

WebFaction put my faith back in web hosting. Their "no-bullst, no marketing vaporware" approach is what seduced me. They don't oversell like most other hosts and the quality of service is top-notch.

I just signed up with Webfaction recently so I can't say much from experience, but initially I'm pretty impressed.
There is an immense amount of control, the Django one-click installer is a dream for Django newbies, and the prices are very reasonable.
The control panel interface is a little strange at first, but you get used to it pretty quickly. It seems kind of backwards at first to create an app, then create a site, then create a domain, but once you wrap your brain around it it's no big deal.

Been with them for over 2 years and I'm loving it. Their django setup is great: fast, stable and flexible. Also, they have by far the best customer service I've ever seen!

I have nothing more to say: I agree with everything that's been said so far :)

I like the fact that they don't oversell. Their servers seem less crowded than most other hosts.

These guys are just awesome!

I love WebFaction! The setup is almost as flexible as a VPS (I can install my own modules etc) and I don't have to maintain the server myself.

Been with Webfaction for a little over two months now, and I've had no complaints. Came here from A Small Orange, where setting up anything django related became a royal pain in the end.
With Webfaction, I can get a default installation, easily switch it over to the django trunk, and get up and working within minutes. Customer service is great, and I've yet to experience any downtime.
kstutts 1 year, 11 months ago
In the past I've tried DreamHost, BlueHost and then WebFaction and WebFaction had by far the best customer service (especially for questions about Django). So far my server has had a low load average (around 0.6) and I've never seen it down so I'm a happy chappy :)

WebFaction: easy setup, great performance and wonderful people!

I have been with them for half a year now. I love the flexibility that they give, and how easy it is to setup a website. The only problem for me, as is already said above, is controlling the memory that I use. They have been increasing it, though. I think it was 20 MB when I signed up. Now it is 60 MB. The customer support is really great; in my experience, they take less than a day to respond (sometimes only hours).

Very fast, flexible, easy setup. Friendly and competent support team.

Fast, easy upgrades, similar to VPS as far as command line flexibility and memory allocations. Just all-around stable hosting provider for the experienced sys admins and hobby web developers out there.

I've been with WebFaction for a year now. I've used more than five other web hosts; none of them even come close! WebFaction has such a powerful SSH environment (basically as powerful as a dedicated server) and it allows me to do work and advanced stuff that no other shared web hosts support. I really love their service. It's made for advanced users like me who need POWER.
The Django stuff is really great too. Soooo easy! Just a few clicks and I can create any app I want, as well as select from a huge amount of previous versions, just incase I need to work with old code.
Highly recommended.

Django + mod_wsgi is now part of the one click-installables. They are doing a great work!

Great on service. My personal experience: fast, helpful, intelligent, professional.
go for them.

I can't understand why people consider django-friendly this site, when all the documentation is a screencast. You need a lot of research before being able to set a working production site.
ryanberg 1 year, 7 months ago
delibaltas - WebFaction is considered friendly to Django because of the following:
WebFaction may not be the only host with these features, but they put it all together in an attractive package.
prebrov 1 year, 6 months ago
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're discussing Webfaction's shared hosting? Or is it their dedicated servers?
If first, again, correct me if I don't get it, but no one has ever struck memory lack of RAM or CPU time?
I'm just trying to figure out if that's a shared hosting as it usually is or more of a VPS?
ryanberg 1 year, 6 months ago
prebov - I believe the discussion has been focused on WebFaction's shared environment

I've had a fantastic experience with WebFaction so far. They have been quick and responsive in getting GeoDjango working, they have every python module that I've needed installed already, their control panel is both easy and flexible, and all of this for only about ten bucks a month. It's great!
carljm 1 year, 5 months ago
WebFaction is great from a Django developer's perspective, but their mail server uptime is terrible. I have two clients with email hosted at WebFaction, and both of them experience regular (i.e. every one or two weeks) mail server outages. WebFaction always posts about the issues on their status blog, which is nice, but that's still way too often to be having mailserver issues.
joshontheweb 1 year, 3 months ago
I am thoroughly happy with webfaction. It is the closest you can come to having a dedicated server, regarding your control over configuration (not memory). You have your own instance of apache, and your own python as well. very easy to do what you want without having to hassle the them to change settings that you have no control over.
btaylordesign 1 year, 1 month ago
Web Faction is absolutely the best shared hosting environment experience I've had thus far with Django and Rails. Their control panel makes setting up and routing application instances extremely easy, and their support is also top notch.
It's easy to customize the software installed on your account and install Ruby Gems and Python modules.
I highly recommend WebFaction to all of my clients.

Undountedly the web host out there. There is no need to read these reviews inorder to choose webfaction. They have one click installers which make your life easy. I have been using it for more than an year and their support is the best.
Highly recommended.

The way they set things up take a little getting used to, but with a little creative symlinking I was able to change it around to something that made more sense to me

After getting an account due to all the craze about webfaction being the best Django host, I was very surprised how well they met up to the hype. They let you run instances of whatever web server you want (apache, lighttpd, and nginx I believe are among supported ones). The amount of flexibility that is offered is AMAZING. It is completely different from any other shared hosts I have used.
Webfaction never ceases to amaze me

Beware shared hosting.
I guess I'll be one of the first to dissent. I've had my website with them for 6 months, but over the last month have been getting more and more timed out queries on the database (which is the same size as day 1). After multiple support requests, they finally replied that they identified a user on my server that was taking up too many resources, and the problem would be fixed within a few weeks. A few weeks go by with little improvement and now I am getting nasty-grams form them because my cron jobs are stacking up because the Postgres db is unresponsive.
They are probably a fine host for someone setting up a low-volume blog. For any serious web site, get a VPS.
